CD #0044 carola bauckholt : crAnk and cloud - orchestral works

One of Carola Bauckholt's major talents is the gift of attentive and passionate listening. Through persistent research, she uncovers the hidden musical potential of ambient sounds such as the gurgling of a fountain, a grinding crank, birds, dogs, construction machinery or a babbling baby, which then become the core of entire works. These sounds need a mediator like Bauckholt who translates them, thinks them through musically, and places them into often surprising contexts.

This album features the so far most comprehensive compilation of her astonishing and multifaceted works for large ensembles. It offers an in-depth exploration of her unique position in contemporary music and provides a detailed recapitulation of her artistic development over a period of 22 years (1996-2018).

“What fascinates and drives Bauckholt is neither the refined orchestral language of high culture nor the Hölderlin poem. She concentrates on raw material largely untouched by music history. When she lets this material think, when she develops it compositionally, she sets foot in a new territory that must first be made habitable.” (Martina Seeber in the liner notes)
